Introduction to computational holography


This blog will feature a research and study of computational holography in 3D Imaging and its applications... 

So basically what a 3D holography is-
It can be called as 3 dimensional projection that freely exist in space unlike 3D Television or Virtual Reality which require 3D glasses,Holography is visible to every human being or a robotic machine that can visually recognize 3 dimensional objects without using 3D glasses.So to bring this holographic image to life we need a 3D display  or a holographic projector.

Hence Holography can be called as next stage of photography whose feature of 3 dimensionality creates completely new possibility for use,such as product presentation ,pre-manufacture prototyping ,simulations etc.Unlike conventional film on a standard display ,a 3D hologram is visible from all the sides enabling an absolute realistic looking image experience as shown below

So how are the hologram projectors..
In hologram display which is illuminated by a laser ,each pixel of the display sends out light waves.
Then the phase of light waves is modulated by driving the display.Changing the phase basically is defined as delay of light from one pixel to other pixels.

Computational Holographic Imaging for 3D Holographic Projection

In this blog,we will see how amazingly we can use the computer hologram images for three dimensional projection.As we have seen in earlier post that the 3D hologram can be seen without using 3D glasses.So,How do they do it? The concept is actually based on an illusionary technique called Peppers Ghost .John Henry Pepper was the one who attempted to popularize this effect.It was first used in Victorian Theaters   across   London in the 1860s. In pepper's ghost there are two rooms, one room is visible to the audience which is the "main room  and the other one is hidden called as "blue room". A plate of glass is placed somewhere in the main room at an angle that reflects the view of the blue room towards the audience. Generally this is arranged with the blue room to one side of the stage, and the plate on the stage rotated around its vertical axis at 45 degrees.     image source:iStock The concept of hologram/holography originated in Hungary when one of the resident scientists there invented it as a method to improve the resolution of electron microscopes .         Holography is composed of following main processes:         1. Calculations for   the scattered wavefronts originating from the object.         2. Encoding the data for display purpose.         3. Visual reconstruction from   the interference pattern onto a coherent beam of light by using some technologies and transport it to the user  who is going to observe the hologram.         Now that we're done with a brief intro to this topic we shall be looking further deep into what goes inside to develop such fascinating or 'real life-like'  technology.
